How to Style a Cardigan: Fall 2020
It’s cozy cardigan time! There are so many options to choose from. In this post, we’ll dive into how to style a cardigan for the new season.
The cardigan styles for fall 2020 are leaning towards boxy and oversized cuts for a relaxed look.
But… if you’ve been wearing the same kind of cardigan for the past few seasons, it’s time to try something new! Order a few new styles and see what works for you.
In my step-by-step guide, The Shopping Formula, I walk you through building your look with new items to refresh your personal style. The program is perfect to help you realize what you need for the new season.
Personally? Honestly, cardigans haven’t always been my personal favorite layering piece. Before baby, I only owned 2, and they were for wearing around the house.
Because of quarantine, I don’t find myself wearing my favorite jackets as often. I needed to add something soft and comfy to my layer mix. I’m having a blast experimenting with new styles for both myself and my clients.
Here are the two cardigan purchases I made that I totally love (surprisingly)!
My Style Personality is between The Creative Heart and The Versatile Professional. Both cardigans fit the description.

What to Wear Under an Open Cardigan
Cardigans can be styled in many ways. They can be dressed down with your favorite tee or dressed up with a blouse.
If you feel like there’s too much fabric with the top and cardigan together, try tucking in the shirt or doing a french tuck to show off your waist.
Ladies, you can show off your waist no matter what size you are. Doing this can also change what you think about the cardigan, I promise it can drastically change the look.
Another style tip: if you like an option that looks oversized, you can try ordering a size down for a slimmer fit.
What Pants to Style with a Cardigan
The most important thing when styling a cardigan? Make sure you don’t get lost in the clothes.
If the cardigan is really oversized and boxy, aim for a straight cut or slimmer cut pant.
If you wear a cropped or shorter cardigan, you can wear a wide-leg and high-waist pant.
Different Types of Cardigans for 2020
The Coatigan
Petal + Pup
$84.95
If you aren’t a big cardigan person but love the idea of wearing a cardigan, this one is a great option. The style is so clean-cut and put together. It’ll keep you warm but keep your outfit classic and cool.
The Shawl Cardigan
Nordstrom
$49.50
There isn’t a crazy amount of extra fabric hanging down the front on this cardigan. You can throw it on and go out the door. It comes in multiple colors to choose one that goes with the tops you already own. The shawl cardigan is cozy and flattering for many body types.
The Cropped Ribbed Cardigan
& Other Stories
$119.00
The color of this cardigan really appealed to me! How often do you find a bold hue like this in a cardigan? I also love the crop boxy look with high-waist straight pants, wide legs, or skinnies.
If you want to make the look more feminine, wear a lace silk-like cami underneath tucked into your pants.
The Balloon-Sleeve Cardigan
Ann Taylor
$98.00
This cardigan style is ultra-feminine and dramatic. Why not add some volume to the sleeves? You’ll either love this or you’ll hate it. If you’re petite, roll up the sleeve in or out once, just to make sure you don’t lose the billowyness of the garment.
A Leopard Print Cardigan Option
Evereve
$98.00
Yes, leopard print is everywhere! Now that I told you, I bet you’ll see if everywhere too. But what makes this one special is only the top half is leopard print. So unique!
A Fringe Sweater Cardigan
Anthropologie
$128.00
One of the big trends for fall fashion this year is fringe. Fringe on jackets, on boots, on shirts, and on cardigans. I love this boho style cardi and the reviews don’t lie: it scored 4.4 out of 5 stars.
The Waffle Cropped Cardigan
Nordstrom
$49.00
This is a great casual, on-trend option. It’s relaxed and easy to add texture to your outfits with any favorite tee. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can add a belt to this look and keep the colors neutral and simple.
