Stepping Out With This Season's Boot Trends
Boots are my absolute favorite shoe. No matter what type I’m wearing, they always make my outfit look and feel more dressed up. There are so many styles, colors, and prints to choose from, you really need to take your time to find just the right pair.
Depending on how bold you want to go, you can rock sparkly, animal print, thigh-high, or even colorful options. An animal print boot is great to pair with solid color pieces, or even mix-and-matched prints. Animal prints also work perfectly with other patterns—and they don’t even have to match! Taller boots will keep your legs warm and add a dramatic look to your ensemble, especially when worn with a dress or a skirt.
Still looking for ideas? The boot combinations below will help you brainstorm how to create new looks with this season’s hottest boot options.
WHAT ABOUT TALL BOOTS?
For a while, it was difficult to find tall boots for the fall. But now they’re back and trendier than ever! I find that taller options are worn best as a casual flat boot with jeans or leggings. You can also dress up your lighter-colored skinny jeans with a tall fitted suede boot and tee.
There’s something luxurious about suede that makes an outfit extra special. If you’re stepping out in suede, be sure to treat it with Suede and Nubuck Leather Protector, especially if you live in a city where you could get caught in unexpected rain.
WORK DRESS
DRESS $129.00 // TALL BOOTS $69.99 //GLITTER BOOTIES $125.30
I hope this combo surprises you! When I assemble my outfits, I love to share combinations no one ever thinks of.
Mahogany is a popular color this season and is bolder than your average black boot. Although the color may seem confusing, it will pair with almost anything. Your fall wardrobe probably includes a lot of reds, purples, and navys—possibly browns and burnt oranges if you’ve shopped with The Closet Edit stylists this season.
I had to use glitter booties in one of these outfits. The holidays are just around the corner, and for those of us who love a little sparkle, we will find any way to make these work. Here, I’ve paired them with a dress, but feel free to break out of the dressy category and match them with jeans and a tee.
Let me repeat: You can wear these with casual jeans and a tee. I promise you won’t look out of sorts! I just posted a photo on our Instagram of a J Crew weekend look I LOVE.
ABOVE THE KNEE SKIRT
SKIRT $79.99 // TALL BOOTS $294.95 // DARK BROWN BOOTIES $128.95
Tall suede boots are probably the easiest go-to if you’re looking for a higher cut. There are so many options in stores right now! You could easily go with a shorter pair, but I love how sexy a higher heel looks in suede. If you wear a lot of skirts and dresses during the fall season, these may just become your new favorites.
Dark brown booties are a great way to break out of the black boot slump. They’re a great alternative and mix with all the season’s colors—including those lighter ones you wouldn’t expect (think baby blue and lavender).
I’ve been leaning more on brown booties with my clients because I know it’s easy for them to find a light brown or black boot on their own. I want to add something new to their closets that will level up their looks. Of course, any outfit below will pair perfectly with a black boot, but don’t be afraid to open your mind to new possibilities.
SKINNY JEANS
SKINNY JEANS $89.00 // BEIGE BOOTS $189.95 // SIDE CUT BOOTIES $149.95
If you want a tall weekend boot for your denim, I'd say go for beige! It’s bright, it’s beautiful, and it will make your dark outfits look a little lighter. If you normally go for brighter colors and love your summer palette, these will be a perfect addition to your wardrobe.
Another option is a bootie with a side cut. Since booties aren’t typically covered by pants or a skirt, it’s great to find a pair with eye-catching detail.
CROP FLARE
PERFORATED BOOTIES $101.96 // CROP FLARE PANTS $115.00 // SHORT BEIGE BOOTIES $187.95
The crop flare is finally catching on with clients, and they are way more flattering than you’d expect. When pairing these with boots, I recommend searching for booties without a wide opening at the top. The short beige bootie is the perfect mix of classy and casual. It’s the perfect way to dress up your denim.
On the other side of the spectrum is a perforated, cream-colored bootie—just as trendy as it is fun! If you’re looking to try something out of the box, this bootie would be a great option to play with. When pairing a bootie with black distressed denim, be sure to go for a lighter option so it doesn’t get lost in the look.
WIDE LEG
WIDE LEG PANT $98.50 // GREEN BOOTIES $230 // DARK RED BOOTIES $77.40
The wide leg is another new favorite, but my clients aren’t quite sure what shoes to wear with them. I chose this light plaid pair to go with these colorful boots. The green suede Ted Baker booties are beautiful on their own, but since we’re in the middle of sweater season, you may be wondering what to pair with your favorite pants or skirt. Having a gorgeous statement boot like these will make your outfit look much more put together. The green is hard to find, which makes me love it more.
Dark wine shoes pair well with browns, oranges, and beiges. If you’re looking to add some color to the neutral palette of your outfits, you’ll really enjoy dark red. It’s so versatile, it’s almost another neutral.
MIDI SKIRT
PRINT SKIRT $98.00 // LEOPARD BOOTIES $125.96 // STUDDED BOOTIES $146.96
If you’re feeling especially adventurous, trying mixing prints with a leopard bootie and an abstract, swirled skirt. Yes, it works, and if you throw on a navy sweater and layer on some necklaces before leaving the house, you’ll feel like your creative self. If you enjoy colors and textures, I recommend exploring abstract color and print combos.
You might like it. You might not. It never hurts to try.
This black bootie is studded, which makes it very edgy, but perfect for a colorful, flirty skirt. If you don’t wear a lot of jewelry, it’s nice to have a pair of shoes that bring the bling for you. If you do love jewelry, the more glam the better! You can rock it either way.
Don’t be afraid to break out of your typical fall looks with a new pair of boots. Before you buy another brown or black boot, think about what you can do to spice up your wardrobe.
