Shop your Closet - How to wear a Blazer
Helping clients "shop their closet" is one of my favorite services because showing you how to re-purpose pieces you own brings so much joy and saves you money. The goal of this type of appointment is to find new ways to wear the clothing already in your closet. Think of it as the equivalent of rearranging the furniture in your home. The end result is a personal lookbook filled with new outfits combinations for you to try.
The lookbooks we create are in digital format for easy access but for blogging purposes I decided to document the outfits in a flatlay for you!
Client Style Profile: I've worked with this for 4 years and help her clean her closet and create outfits two times a year. She does all of her own shopping and has a lot of clothing, but loves having visuals and ideas of how to wear all her great pieces. She prefers to wear more professional looks for work with a classic feel. Her casual wear is also dressy and she's one of the very few ladies I work with that pretty much lives in heels.
The blazer used here is from White House Black Market. If you prefer more feminine cuts that skim your waist and hips they are definitely a go-to shop for blazers. Most people tend to gravitate towards blazers in neutrals like black or gray and might assume that a color like this light blue will be limiting. But as you will see, it works with so many looks!!
HOW TO WEAR A BLAZER WITH A DRESS
An easy way to pair a colorful blazer with a dress is to go with a neutral. This black and white floral dress is enhanced by the blazer and makes a great look for work.
Don't be afraid to mix patterns, textures, and colors. White shoes are a great alternative to a pair of nude pumps. This white shoe has a snakeskin texture, but it really compliments that simple floral pattern of the dress and lets the beautiful blue blazer really be the star of this ensemble.
You don't have to do a big statement necklace but in this case I like that my client has the option. The sparkly cut almost matches the print of the dress and it brings the attention up to her face.
HOW TO WEAR A BLAZER WITH DENIM
I really love dressing down a blazer with jeans because it gives clients more options. Wearing a blazer can sometimes feel too conservative. Wearing it like this makes it feel more relaxed yet pulled together. It is a great option when a cardigan feels too casual but you don't want to wear a jacket.
Mixing neutrals together gives an unexpected feel to the look. The white pumps makes this look too dressy, and wearing black makes it kind of blah, but gray is perfect. Flats are definitely an option for this look but this client in particular really enjoys wearing heels.
In this outfit I chose a delicate necklace because it felt appropriate and modern. The sparkly swarovski kept the denim look more classic.
HOW TO WEAR A BLAZER WITH A SKIRT
This work look is more tailored and professional. I think the colorful floral top pairs well with the blue blazer even though there are not blue traces in the top. The gray skirt and nude heels bring the look together. Again we are mixing a patterned top, with a subtle texture in the skirt, and a neutral show that brings out the warmth in the colors.
My client has many jewelry options! She loves accessorizing and I was surprised to find this delicate necklace that was almost true to color with the blazer. Because there is a lot going on in this outfit, it seemed best to pair the look with a delicate necklace.
