How do you shop again after having a baby?
Becoming a mom has come with a whole new way of living my day-to-day life. I’m six weeks postpartum and have been figuring out life as a mom. I will never be fully who I was before baby—my responsibilities have changed drastically! As my little one grows, I know I’ll evolve through different stages of motherhood, but right now, I’m in this beautiful, slow paced, time blur space.
In the first few weeks of motherhood, the ways I felt more like a human and not just a milk source, were in the little things. First, it was going shopping in a grocery store again. Then, it was putting on makeup, which I now do almost every day because it makes me feel like I’m taking time for myself. It takes work though! I'm in bed with baby in one arm and trying to make my brow lines straight, it's not an easy task. But every time I look in the mirror, I see a put-together face and know I’ve got this today.
Finally, after four weeks, I was ready to shop for clothes without the baby bump. It was soooo important for me to get out of pregnancy clothes and embrace my new body. My leftover maternity wear made me feel bigger than I actually was, and none of them fit because there was no baby in my belly anymore. Truth be told, pregnancy clothes is not the cutest thing in my closet I did a mix of online and instore shopping, and my instore purchases were quicker and far more successful, I love the instant purchases without returns or waiting.
Believe it or not, my Style Mantra hasn't changed. I want to feel like the same person I used to be before my baby, but how I go about achieving my goal has evolved to fit my new lifestyle.
I choose clothes that make me feel powerful and feminine. I love colors, bold pieces, and combining clothing in creative ways. Before my baby, I used to wear a lot of skirts, dresses, and items that had to be sent to the dry cleaner. Now, I still wear those pieces when I’m out alone, but I also ensure to incorporate some of my dressed down, washer-friendly clothes—especially when I know I’m going to be spending the day with my baby. (Which, let’s be honest, is about 100% of the time.)
I went to my closet and figured out what I could use. The goal was to assemble a capsule wardrobe that fits me right now. I may lose weight along the way, but as baggy and comfortable as my maternity clothes are, they just don’t make me feel good. I have an ab separation (diastasis recti) of close to two inches, so although I’m close to my pre-pregnancy weight, my waist is just a bit wider. My normal pants don’t fit the way they used to, and my shirts are a bit tight from breastfeeding. However, I know that when I stop breastfeeding, that, too, will change.
After organizing my closet to see what I could work with, I made a list of what I needed to complete my looks.

My body has been through a lot this past year, and I’m grateful to it for carrying me on and helping me support my beautiful daughter. Just because my fashion mantra is evolving with motherhood doesn’t mean I’m letting go of who I am. The way I see it, I’m just stepping into this new, wonderful chapter in life, and my style will follow suit.
