Sweater and Skirt Combos you MUST try

By Jennifer Saul

It’s officially sweater season, and I, for one, am super stoked about it. I’m living for the comfy, warm, and relaxed vibe this fall, but wearing sweater/pants combos on repeat can get a bit too uniform-like for my tastes. By mid-season, I’m really missing my spring and summer skirts! Thankfully, sweaters with skirts is a big trend this Fall, and I’m here to help you formulate your way to pairing perfection.

Some of my favorite skirts from spring and summer are light and flowy. During warmer days, I pair them with pretty lightweight tanks and tops. To bring my favorite skirts into fall, I pair them with a knit sweater, do a half-tuck in the front, then finish it all off with a chunky block heel bootie.

For this look, you can choose a chunky cropped sweater and just barely tuck the hem into the waistband of your skirt, letting the rest flow out. If your sweater is a lighter weight knit, try pairing these flowy skirts with a more structured outer layer like a moto or jean jacket.

For a more polished look reminiscent of the 60’s, try a more fitted knit sweater fully tucked into your favorite a-line skirt. This combo from Modcloth shows a turtleneck with a simple print skirt. If a turtleneck is uncomfortable for you, but you want to try a high neck style, try a mockneck, which is one of our New Fall Essentials. When paired with a tall boot, you achieve a classic, put together look. If you have a formal work environment or a classic style, this might be a go-to look for you.

Slouchy sweaters (think dolman sleeves or off the shoulder seams) can be tucked in the front of a pencil skirt to balance out the proportions of the fabric. For this to be successful, the sweater needs to be a lighter weight material in a relaxed fit. This also makes it easy to add a blazer or jacket to finish off your look. Complete your outfit with a heel, bootie, or even a sneaker depending on your personal style!

When it comes to pairing sweaters with skirts, it all comes down to fit, proportion, and personal style. Don’t be afraid to mix it up and try something new!
